The NFSA releases The Giorgio Mangiamele Collection on DVD, featuring Mangiamele’s significant film work from the 1950s and 1960s.
The Italian-born filmmaker Giorgio Mangiamele (1926-2001) arrived in Australia as a migrant in 1952 and the following year began making his first feature, Il Contratto (The Contract). His film Clay represented Australia at the Cannes Film Festival in 1965.
The NFSA restores four of Mangiamele’s films for the DVD box set, three of which screen at the 2011 Melbourne International Film Festival.
The NFSA marks the centenary of Sir Douglas Mawson’s Australasian Antarctic Expedition with the Extreme Film and Sound: Stories from Antarctica exhibition and screenings of rare silent Antarctic films featuring explorers Mawson, Robert F Scott and Ernest Shackleton.
